Bread in Ancient Rome: An online presentation and bread-making workshop conducted by Farrell Monaco

Salvete pistores! It’s giveaway and workshop time!

The live Panis Quadratus lecture and bread-making workshop via Excellence Through Classics on May 5th was packed to the internet rafters and was a smashing success! Thanks to all who attended! I understand that some people missed the May 5th workshop, however, as the Zoom room was changed at the last minute by the organizer to accommodate the higher number of participants. Fear not, pistores! I’ve got you covered, as always.

I am launching a second workshop on June 6th at 12 noon PST… And it’s FREE! Your registration for the workshop also enters you to win one of my custom-designed Panis Quadratus wheel presses and a large Pompeian linen bread bag, made by My Bukuro, to store your Panis Quadratus loaf in after baking!

Join me for a FREE 1 1/2 hour presentation and workshop on bread and bread-making in ancient Rome on June 6th at 12 noon PST. I will discuss the archaeology of bread in ancient Rome, sources of evidence, methods of manufacture, form, function and symbolism. Following the introductory presentation, participants will work with me to make their own Panis Quadratus loaves based on my recent research conducted at Pompeii, Italy.

To register and enter the giveaway, click the link below and subscribe to the Tavola Mediterranea newsletter. This will be your workshop registration and giveaway entry.

Emails will go out to registrants the week prior to the workshop with the link to the Zoom room and instructions on what to prepare prior to the session. The workshop will cover the history and archaeology of bread-making and bakeries in Rome, and some of the various theories (old and new) related to the manufacture of the iconic Panis Quadratus… and then we’ll make one ourselves! The winner of the giveaway will also be announced during the workshop and by email afterwards.
